Only people who have already registered for the Iowa Science of Reading summit are eligible to enroll in this course.
Intended Audience: Iowa Science of Reading Summit attendees; teachers, instructional coaches, literacy coaches, interventionists, administrators, higher education instructors, and educational professionals.
Course Description: This class will increase educators’ knowledge around the science of reading and structured literacy to improve their English/language arts and reading instruction. The class will focus on implementing structured literacy across all MTSS tiers, understanding the components of structured literacy, examining current research in literacy instruction, and advocating for change towards the science of reading.
Course Objectives:
1) Identify the components of structured literacy instruction and apply techniques in universal classroom, group instruction, and one on one interventions.
2) Identify the qualities of strong evidence-based instructional programs.
3) Identify and apply strategies for making change to literacy instruction in a school and district.
4) Identify and utilize resources that can improve literacy instruction.
Course Requirements: Register for the Iowa Science of Reading Summit (https://www.eventsquid.com/event/22566) and attend the on-site professional development provided by the Iowa Reading Research Center on July 18-19, 2024, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Convention Complex.
Attendees must also complete the Teacher Tools for Universally Implementing Structured Literacy Content AND the Dyslexia Overview eLearning modules. If you’ve completed the Dyslexia Overview module, please complete the Understanding and Observing the Literacy Skills Associated with Dyslexia eLearning module through the Iowa Reading Research Center’s eLearning platform (https://www.irrc-learning.org). Note: If you’ve completed any of these modules within the last 3 months, you do not need to retake the module(s).
