Intended Audience: General and adapted physical education teachers, paraeducators, and instructional coaches at the K–12 level
Course Description: This fully online asynchronous professional development course equips educators with knowledge and practical tools to successfully include students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in general physical education settings. Through interactive workshops, case studies, and adapted activity planning, participants will learn strategies for accessible instruction, peer support, and collaboration with special educators and families. Grounded in evidence-based practices, this training supports the development of inclusive, safe, and engaging environments for all learners.
Course Learning Goals:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the characteristics and educational needs of students with IDD in physical activity settings.
- Identify common barriers to participation and develop strategies for inclusive instruction.
- Apply universal design principles and adapted equipment techniques to modify PE activities.
- Foster positive peer interaction and social inclusion in team-based physical activities.
- Collaborate effectively with paraprofessionals, therapists, and families to support student success.
Course Requirements:
- Complete all asynchronous online modules (15 contact hours total)
- Watch instructional videos and demonstrations
- Engage with required readings and downloadable resources
- Participate in online reflection prompts and discussion boards
- Submit a Reflective Implementation Plan describing how course strategies will be applied in their own practice
- Complete a case-based scenario response at the end of the course
