Full course description

This course will stimulate teachers to consider the purposes of education from a U.S. and international perspective. The bulk of the course takes the form of attendance at events during the University of Iowa Provost’s Global Forum, April 11-13, 2019. This year’s event is entitled, Why School? International Perspectives on Education and Social Transformation. The speakers and presenters at the various events will offer multiple views on the relationship between systems of education and socio-cultural values. They will also speak to the possibility of education being a catalyst for social change. As education is meant to prepare us for a future, speakers will address how the future is impacted by contemporary educational policies and society itself. Examining education from this global and comparative perspectives will offer insight into our current systems of education, as well as prompt us to consider how contemporary approaches to education are contending with present complex social challenges.
